How to play these Music Theory Games
HOW TO PLAY STARFISH STAFF MUSIC NOTE THEORY GAME
Playing Starfish Staff is easy. Players choose their favorite color starfish and then take turns flipping cards and identifying notes (beginning students only have to identify the note line or space number while more advanced students can identify the note name). Players move forward the number line or space their card indicates (e.g. a pearl on the first space means move forward one; a pearl on the fourth line means move forward four).

HOW TO PLAY COUNTING CATERPILLARS RHYTHM BUILDING MUSIC GAME
In this rhythm music theory game, players will take turns drawing cards and creating measures for four different meters (2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4). When a measure is complete, the student will clap and count the measure for the caterpillar to metamorphose into a butterfly! The first student to create all four measures (2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4) wins!

HOW TO PLAY FROGGY FIFTHS CIRCLE OF FIFTHS MUSIC GAME
Easily teach the Circle of Fifths by playing Froggy Fifths in your music studio. Players will choose a frog and a card then take turns rolling a die to travel around the board.
When a player lands on a key signature that’s on their card, they can claim it with a token. The first player to claim all four key signatures wins!

HOW TO PLAY LISTENING LEMURS EAR TRAINING MUSIC GAME
Playing Listening Lemurs is super simple:
- Each student picks a lemur game piece
- You play a random major, minor, or perfect interval (there’s a teacher guide to help you)
- Students identify whether the interval is major, minor, or perfect
- Students draw the corresponding card that tells them how to move
- Repeat until the first student reaches home
The cards give the students more than just “move forward.”
Sometimes students must move backwards, swap places, or even return to start!
This gameplay adds a little tension and luck as students identify intervals.

HOW TO PLAY RABBIT RHYTHMS MUSIC THEORY GAME
Your students will easily learn how to play Rabbit Rhythms:
- Each student picks a rabbit game piece and garden row
- Teacher flips up a rhythm card
- Students figure out if the rhythm card is a measure in 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, or 5/4 and race to slap the correct meter first
- Students can opt to clap & count measure for a bonus move forward
- Repeat until the first student has hopped across the vegetable garden!
If you want a gentle-play option, give each student a die and require them to roll the correct number for the time signature before they move forward (2 = 2/4, 3 = 3/4, 4 = 4/4, 5 = 5/4).

HOW TO PLAY CHAMELEON CHORDS MUSIC THEORY GAME
Chameleon Chords is a great game for students who love strategy and students who just like to play games.
The basic gameplay is:
- Each player chooses a chameleon and starting place
- Player draws a chord card
- Player identifies chord
- Player moves forward, backward, or sideways according to the move chart (on game board)
- If player reaches a bug piece, they collect it
- Players continue until all bug game pieces have been collected
Once the bugs are all collected from the game board, the players count to see who has the highest number of bugs collected. The winner can take a picture with the success poster that you can share on social media and with parents.

HOW TO PLAY KEYBOARD KITTENS PIANO KEYS MUSIC GAME
The gameplay is a simple, Candyland-type gameplay where students draw a card, identify the note, and move forward–unless, of course, they get a specialty card, in which they could move forward or backward!
We know students are going to love it!

HOW TO PLAY MAJOR SCALES MUSIC THEORY GAME SALAMANDER SCALES
The gameplay for Salamander Scales is simple but very fun.
Students collect cards to see who can get the major scale pattern first and race to claim the most spots on the board.
But there’s a slight catch – at the end, whoever has the longest salamander trail gets bonus points!

HOW TO PLAY FLAMINGO FLATS MUSIC SIGHT-READING THEORY GAME
While this looks like a checkers game, the movement is slightly different but just as easy.
Students identify how many notes should be flat on the sight-reading cards and move forward accordingly (e.g. 2 notes flat = 2 moves, 4 notes flat = 4 moves).
The flamingo and shrimp game pieces can move forward, sideways, and backwards.
And, of course, can jump the opponent if desired.
Whoever can get all their game pieces to the other side first wins!

HOW TO PLAY SCARECROW SCORES MUSIC GAME TEACHING MUSIC SCORES
In essence, Scarecrow Scores is a very easy game to play.
You roll a die and move your crow game piece forward.
The difficulty lies in knowing how to read the actual score (which, we include a move guide in case you as the teacher need a refresher).
If the student rolls a 3, they move forward 3 measures. If they roll a 6, they move forward 6 measures.
If they reach a repeat sign, they have to return to the beginning (or to a forward-facing repeat sign, if you added that).
Whoever reaches the final bar line first wins!
There are literally dozens of ways to play this game and your students will never be confused with score reading again!

HOW TO PLAY SHRIMP SHARPS MUSIC SIGHT-READING THEORY GAME
While this looks like a checkers game, the movement is slightly different but just as easy.
Students identify how many notes should be sharp on the sight-reading cards and move forward accordingly (e.g. 2 notes sharp = 2 moves, 4 notes sharp = 4 moves).
The flamingo and shrimp game pieces can move forward, sideways, and backwards.
And, of course, can jump the opponent if desired.
Whoever can get all their game pieces to the other side first wins!

HOW TO PLAY ICY INTERVALS MUSIC THEORY GAME
