How to Play Kingdom Keys Major Key Signature Game
- You will use one less kingdom token than the number of players you have (4 players use 3 kingdom tokens). Place kingdom tokens on the board in their matching places (e.g. castle at the castle site).
- Sit in a circle if possible with the game board in center. Shuffle the key signature cards. Choose 1 person to be the dealer and deal each player 4 cards. Place the remaining cards face-down in a draw pile.
- Play like Spoons:
- Each player tries to match 4 cards of the same key signature (4 C major, 4 F# major, etc.) Every key signature has 2 cards in treble clef and 2 cards in bass clef. A wild card can represent any key signature desired by the player.
- The dealer begins by taking 1 card off the deck to have 5 cards in their hand. They will remove 1 card they don’t need and pass it face down to the player on their left. Each player is only allowed to hold 1 wild card in their hand at any given time, and must pass a wild card on if they already hold one.
- Each player picks from the cards the former player has discarded and discards to the next person on their left.
- If the dealer runs out of cards, they can pick up from the last player’s discard pile.
- When a player has 4 cards of the same key signature, they may take a kingdom token from the game board to claim points. Once one person takes a token, all other tokens are up for grabs — so get the one you want fast! Each person can take one token maximum. With all tokens claimed, the round ends. Optional: Require the player with 4 of a kind to say the key signature they have when they take their token.
- The next person clockwise in the circle becomes the new dealer for the next round, reshuffling the cards and dealing 4 to each person. Continue rounds until you reach the point goal.
- How to win:
- Players must be strategic in order to get their 5 points! If needed, keep track of score on a separate piece of paper.
- The game can be won in as few as 2 rounds but can also last several more rounds.
ALTERNATE GAMEPLAY IDEAS
- To make the gameplay longer or shorter, change the number of points for winning.
- Put all the tokens on the gameboard every time (instead of 1 less than the player count) and students grab 1 of their choice. Keep track of your points and see who can win!
