Teaching Chord Inversions Just Got WAY More Fun!

Introducing Insect Inversions – A Fun New Way to Teach Chord Inversions!

We are so excited to introduce Insect Inversions, our newest game that makes learning root position, first inversion, and second inversion an adventure!

If you’ve ever wished for a way to take the frustration out of teaching inversions, this is it. Instead of drilling flashcards or relying on worksheets, your students will be racing their ants through the rainforest, thinking through each inversion as they play.

Because let’s be real—when students enjoy the learning process, they remember it.

Why We Created This Game

We know that learning inversions is a game-changer for students, but getting them to feel confident using them can take some work. We wanted to create a way to make inversions feel natural, memorable, and fun—without making them feel like they’re just doing more theory drills.

And what better way to do that than with a game that lets students choose their level, think through their moves, and experience inversions in action?

That’s how Insect Inversions was born!

How It Works

Students start as ants traveling through the rainforest, picking up inversion cards along the way. Each time they draw a card, they identify the inversion and move forward—getting hands-on experience recognizing root position, first inversion, and second inversion in both keyboard diagrams and staff notation.

To keep things exciting, there are a few surprises along the way—special cards that mix things up, adding just the right amount of strategy and unpredictability.

And if you want to add an extra challenge? Have students play the inversion on the piano before they move forward!

It’s easy to adapt to your teaching style, whether you're using it in private lessons, group classes, or independent learning.

How You Can Use Insect Inversions in Lessons

For Private Lessons:

  • A great warm-up or review to reinforce inversion recognition.
  • Let students choose their level—starting with keyboard-based cards before moving up to staff notation.
  • Challenge them to play the inversion on the piano before they can move forward.

For Group Classes:

  • Play in small teams where students help each other reinforce concepts.
  • Mix both levels so students can challenge themselves at their own pace.
  • Let students explain their reasoning out loud—helping them reinforce the concept verbally as well.

For Homeschool or Independent Learning:

  • Assign it as a self-paced activity where students can play solo or with a sibling.
  • Encourage students to log their progress—tracking how quickly they improve over time.

However you teach, Insect Inversions fits right in.

Why Your Students Will Love It

This isn’t just another theory exercise—it’s an experience!

  • Two challenge levels let students build confidence at their own pace.
  • A rainforest adventure theme makes theory practice way more fun.
  • The hands-on, interactive style helps students understand inversions faster.
  • A little friendly competition keeps them engaged and wanting to play again.

It’s the perfect way to reinforce chord inversions in a way that feels natural, not forced.
