How to Play Neighborhood Notes Music Theory Game
- You will use one less building token than the number of players you have (4 players use 3 buildings). Place buildings on the board in their matching place (e.g. fire station at fire station).
- Shuffle the note cards. Deal each player 4 cards.
- Choose one person to be the dealer. Sit in a circle if possible.
- Play like Spoons.◦
- Each player tries to match 4 notes
- 2 bass F’s and 2 treble F’s
- 2 bass Middle C’s and 2 treble Middle C’s
- See alternative gameplay ideas for more options
- The dealer begins by taking one card off the deck to have 5 cards in their hand. They will remove one card and pass it face down to the player on their left.
- Each player picks from the cards the former player has discarded and discards to the next person on their left.
- If the dealer runs out of cards, they can pick up from the last player’s discard pile.
- Each player tries to match 4 notes
- When a player has 4 of a kind, they will grab a building from the gameboard to claim points.
- How to win:
- Players must be strategic in order to get their 5 points! If needed, keep track of score on a separate piece of paper.
- The game can be won in as few as 2 rounds, but can also last several more rounds.
Easy Gameplay Goal: First player with 5 or more points wins.
Harder Gameplay Goal: First player to get exactly 5 points wins.
Alternate Game Play with Neighborhood Notes
- For 5-8 players: Print 2 decks of cards (to have 64 total cards). Matches can either be 4 of the exact same note (all treble F’s) or 4 paired notes (2 bass F’s, 2 treble F’s).
- For young players: print 2 decks of cards so they can match exact notes (e.g. 4 treble clef E’s).
- To make the gameplay longer or shorter, change the number of points for winning.
